Luminescent nanocrystal tags enable rapid detection of multiple pathogens in a single test

A research team from The Universities of Perdue and Macquarie have been working with luminescent nano crystals for medical imaging. What they is that if applied to high speed scanning technology, these nano crystals are able to detect several pathogens in a matter of minutes. They say that this new information will help with making a diagnosis on a specific type of virus. The research team has successfully attached unique tags to DNA strands of HIV, Ebola virus, Hepatitis B virus and Human Papilloma virus 16. These tags were then accurately read and distinguished at high speeds in suspension arrays. Researchers in Australia are now in the process of designing and manufacturing the nano particles used in pathogen detection.

Scientific Themes

  1. Science is collaborative- Universities team up to go into further research on nano crystals
  2. Repeatability- The tests can be repeated using the same crystals and equipment
  3. Role of Motivation- With more knowledge of these nano crystals, scientists will be able to identify viruses much easier.

  1. This is a well written blog and I like this topic of viruses. I hope that the research that these scientists collect can lead us closer to a cure of HIV and other viruses. It is probably better to find a virus in you sooner than later so you have more time for treatment.
