Deadly Immune 'storm' caused by emergent flu infections

Scientists at the Scripps Research Institute have found key elements of a severe immune overreaction that can sicken or kill patients infected with a certain flu strain. This overreacting 'storm' is an overproduction of immune cells and cytokines, which can lead to lung inflammation, and eventually respiratory distress. The scientists are developing a drug that can help stop this phenomenon and may potentially treat a broader amount of flu virus strains. They hope to use this research to better help other scientists develop vaccines for other types of flu strains.

NOS Themes:

Role of motivation and curiosity: Scientists are motivated to prevent people from dying of the flu.
Science is based on evidence: The experimental drugs lowered the cytokines on infected mice.
